third plane
this was the first band i was ever
in where we played all our own music. it started in akron,
ohio with wilbur krebs on bass and guitar, and joe brigandi
on drums. we moved to san francisco as a band but eventually
broke up. articstic differencs. our number one fan, wendy
duke maintains this website and a first recording is actually
in the offing (not counting our cassette release, 'yelling').
joe
brigandi
one of my oldest and dearest friends. great drummer. teaches
salsa dancing at the metronome in sf. has a private diner
in a converted city bus where he makes sicilian dishes monday
nites in the winter. it's parked next to the kayak/canoe retail
business next to the scooter business next to the caboose
he lives in at the 5th ave marina, oakland. it's getting to
be like a fucking monopoly board down there. if joe a. can't
make it, call joe b.
kenny
brooks
one of my main men. alphabet soup co-founder. now he plays
hippie-rock w/ bob weir. his website has many saxophone transcriptions.
i often crash at his pad when i'm in sf.
redgiantrecords.com
guitarist liberty ellman's label.
check out his title, 'orthodoxy.' vijay iyer also has a few cd's
on this label, my fave, 'panoptic modes.' there's also a cd by
eric crystal called 'dark matter' i would recommend. and not
just because i play piano on a couple of cuts.
sweetgrass
music
phil aaberg and i played in paul
dresher's ensemble where i gained an immense respect and
admiration for his piano playing and general overall musicality.
he could also be the nicest guy i've ever met. his label has
over a dozen titles and 'live in montana' earned a grammy
nomination for best new age recording, though 'new age' hardly
describes phil. he's just a great piano player.
richard
julian
when i first came to nyc, richard
was playing rhythm guitar and singing backup for marshall crenshaw
at the bottom line. the first thing he ever said to me was, 'hey,
cool, i'll show you all the best restaurants.' and he did. and
i've been in his band pretty much ever since.
jay
collins
jay is like louis armstrong meets
tom waits. i love playing in jay's band. when he's not busy with
bobby sanabria or gregg allman we do gigs. nothing like it in
jazz today.
y2khai
this is some funny shit...i don't
know this guy, but he is FUNKY.
mudville
i played wurlitzer and guitar in
this portishead meets joni mitchell meets an evil sampler.
with a dash of that heavy pj harvey vibe. also check out ben
rubin.
ben
rubin
the not as good looking half of mudville. bass in my trio.
mixed my last two records. produces and shit. remixer 420.
jimcampilongo
twangy, bluesy, countrified
roy buchanan meets sonny sharrock. knew jim in sf. he used
to live nearby before he got trendy and moved to williamsburg.
he's the kind of player when you hear him live you're often
laughing and shaking your head because you can't believe what
you just heard. kind of like if monk played guitar.
president's
breakfast
click dark is a very disturbed individual. sort of a musical
dr. bonner. without the soap. dub meets sly and mandrill vs.
mumia and mcgarrett. played a lot of music with click and his
bro, moe. all of it creative and interesting. some of it, damn
funky. see gank sins.
carol
lipnik
i heard carol at the living room one
night right before i went on with richard. she was so unusual
and amazing, i asked her if i could be in her band. she said
yes. i just love carol. her thing is like a kurt weill, velvet
underground but great singing. in the short time i've known her
she has become a big influnece.
jimmy page meets jaws
'i know what a shark looks
like because i've seen one up close.' chief brodie
is
shatner the baddest, or what?
'from hell's heart, i stab at thee.' bring on the bore worms...
bill
mchenry
bill is my favorite nyc tenor player. he's my friend, too.
phil
degruy
met phil in new orleans through charlie hunter and tronzo.
what an original.
alexis
cuadrado
alexis is an excellent bassist from spain who married a very
close friend of the family. so we are kind of related. but
i'm not kidding, he is a really good musician.
scott
amendola
another mr. nice guy. great sense of humor. i always have
fun playing with scott.
he tends to dwell in the realm of the downtown improvisor,
but can do it all.
pornhounds
my wife sharon wrote a very cool comic book about her days
working for an adult publication called the spectator. artwork
by sophie crumb, ed piskor (dude who did american splendor)
and a whole host of others. three others. it's great.
the
bunker
aaron and john are awesome. funky studio with a cool vibe
and lots of vintage type stuff. i think they do mostly rock,
but i did jay's record there, the pacific jazz quartet feat.
sasha and they recorded my trio at the rockwood. sounding
fabulous.
nate shaw
nate's the first guy i call when i can't do a big money gig
or someone calls me for a real organ player. smart, funny,
reliable, good player, snappy dresser and good buddy. he also
has a great studio set up (excellent lighting) where carol
and i have done some recording.
ethan
iverson
ethan is a great pianist who has a very poplular (for jazz,
certainly) trio called the bad plus. their music is difficult
to describe but it is definately adventurous and forward reaching.
he keeps a most excellent blog that i check in with frequently.
graham
connah
a very strong musical ally. excellent pianist. serious composer.
ridiculous sense of humor. he introduced me to my wife. a
very dear friend, indeed, who i am proud to know.
mr.
fastfinger
want to learn how to play super shredding guitar? even if
you don't, this will amaze and entertain you, for sure.
adam
theis
adam is a great trombone player with great concepts. carrying
the funk/jazz torch in the bay area.
